April 1969 issue of Skin Diver Mag. I came across an article for a Underwater Sightseeing Bus.. Yep. You read that right.. An Underwater Sightseeing bus. Apparently this idea didn't get very far off the ground. (Ha! See what I did there!) The first model was to use a 50 tonne, twin keeled submarine. It was capable of carrying up to 8 people and would be available to film crews or scientists. A 2nd version of the bus was to be 63 feet long and carry 40 passengers. I can't even begin to fatho...Read Full Post »

This week I'd like to go in a different direction for our TBT.. How about a Jump Ahead Thursday. Once a month, I'm planning on looking at something new in the world of Scuba diving. Let me know what you think.
For my first Jump Ahead Thursday, I came across this new bundled regs, tanks and BCD set. And apparently it's not just a prototype. You can actually order this. It looks really sleek. I personally would love a set.

October 1969 issue of Skin Diver for this weeks TBT. I saw a full page ad for a company called OEC (Ocean Equipment Corp), What originally caught my eye was the underwater telescope, That's neat I thought, except it wouldn't be useful in our emerald green water.
Then I saw the Closed Circuit breathing system. And the price. $2975!!! Remember this is 1969! But what entertained me the most from the ad was at the very top. An Anesthetic kit for fish collecting. I immediatel...Read Full Post »

Ok for this week's TBT, I'm throwing it back to you guys.. I’m switching it up by including the Tuesday Trivia that I was unable to post a couple of days ago and combining the two. When I first saw this image, I was like, "What in the name of... ' and then I thought, hmm ok well that's a snorkel in his mouth but odd it was in the center, upon further research, it's called a swimmer's snorkel and they are still made. (In fact, they look cool and we can get them from Aqua Lung. But! And h...Read Full Post »

I have no idea why I'm finding this throwback ad from December 1969 so funny. The position maybe? The look on his face? Anyhow, this is obviously an ad showing the 'flexibility' of a wetsuit from the era. There's not alot of info on it in terms of how thick the neoprene is but nonetheless, it's pretty impressive. I'd attempt this in my 2 piece 7mm suit but A) I don't think it would flex that much and B) I don't want to spend the next several weeks trying to un-pretzel myself. A...Read Full Post »

As I was thumbing through the July 1969 issue of Skin diver, I came across an ad for underwater communications via a megaphone type device. As Scuba Divers, we know that when we hear sound underwater, it's very difficult to ascertain what direction it's actually coming from so I found it interesting that such a device would give one the ability to talk underwater. I wasn't sure I wanted to use this ad for this weeks TBT but a few pages later into the same issue and I came across an article wh...Read Full Post »

You ever go to watch a video on youtube and get sucked into that youtube next video spiral? I had one of those the other day. At the end of it, I came across this gem of a video that I thought would fit in with our Throwback Thursday theme splendidly. So I present to you the following 5 minute video from possibly the 1930's. https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=148&v=6OLnmJbs2XQ" target="_blank">Vintage Goggle Spearfishing.

May 1967 Skin Diver mag. Underwater cameras were pretty new technology at the time, so I was surprised to see an article for an underwater cam that does Panoramic shots. I mean, it's got nothing on today's Google Photosphere's but for 1967, You would of been the cat's meow if you had this bad boy.

What do you get when you mix a fridge with a rebreather? Why Liquid Air Scuba, of course. I was looking through the June 1967 issue of Skin Diver and on the front cover it has a big promo stating: "NOW! LIQUID AIR SCUBA! MAJOR ENGINEERING BREAKTHRU"
At first I thought this was something out of the movie 'The Abyss' where you actually breathe oxygen enriched water but alas, it was not to be.
If anyone's interested in reading the other 4 pages, let me know and I can ...Read Full Post »

I came across a very interesting ad in the March 1968 issue of Skin Diver magazine. I saw the below ad and what initially caught my eye was the Vespa logo and then saw a Vespa scooter and thought, “why is Vespa advertising in a Scuba mag?” (Disclaimer, the model may or may not have also caught my eye.) Upon reading the ad, I learned that Vespa teamed up with well know scuba company Mares and another lesser known company named Tigullio who is still around today making dive gear,...Read Full Post »
